China's Current Peripheral Security Environment and Strategic Choices
China's peripheral security environment has maintained general stability with certain fluctuations since 1949. Currently, however, such an environment assumes a severe outlook which can be summarized as steady in the north, turbulent in the south, alleviated in the west, and urgent in the east. Major challenges highlight such issues as the security of the Korean Peninsula, the sovereignty of Diaoyu Islands, China-Japan demarcation of the East China Sea, the South China Sea, the U.S. arms sales to Taiwan, and the complex Sino-Indian relationship. Thus as regards current security strategy, China should continue adhering to the general policy and the periphery diplomatic strategy and striving to establish friendly, stable and cooperating relationships and partnerships with neighboring countries. Specifically, China should promote peace in the north, alleviation in the west, stability in the south, and advances in the east, creating a harmonious decade of peace and solidity for its peripheral environment.
