An Empirical Study of the Determinants of National Soccer Performance
The writers of this paper conduct a macroscopic and empirical study of the factors that influence the national performance in international soccer games. Using the FIFA scores of men's soccer team as the measure for the international soccer performance, the research reveals the multi-faceted determinants for national soccer performance include economy, population, geography, and society of a country. Particular findings are that an inverted U-shape relationship exists between soccer performance and GDP, that soccer training for youth is also a key, and that hosting the World Cup has no significant impact on national soccer performance.
