Harmony in Chinese Organizations: from the Perspective of National Culture
The great impact of national culture on employee' s work values is a critical issue for global management nowadays. From the perspective of national culture, this paper examines if harmonious culture originated from Yijing is embedded in Chinese organizations by investigating how Chinese employees identify harmony at workplace. Employing exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses together with structural equation modeling, an eight-factor framework is discovered that displays a similar pattern to the eight-trigram model symbolizing harmony in Yijing. More specifically, the eight factors formulated here fit with the semantic and symbolic implications of the eight trigrams very well, demonstrating that the current mindset of Chinese workers is still significantly affected by their traditional national culture. In addition to embodying the thoughts of the fifth cultural dimension - Confucian dynamism, the research results are beneficial for non-Chinese executives to understand and manage Chinese staff effectively.
