Study of the Effect of Rod Electrode Diameter and Tip Shape on AC Breakdown Voltages of Short Air Gaps
The air gap AC breakdown characteristic test often uses rod-rod and rod-plate electrodes as test electrodes, and the influence of rod electrode diameter and rod end shape on the air gap AC breakdown characteristic is still unclear. In this paper, the rod-rod and rod-plate electrodes are constructed with 2 cm and 1 cm diameter round rods and 1 cm diameter pointed rods, and the AC breakdown test is carried out under a short air gap of 5~40 cm to study the influence of the rod electrode diameter and tip shape on the AC breakdown characteristics of the air gap.The results show that within the range of the diameter and tip shape of the test rod electrodes, the effects of rod electrode diameter and end shape on the breakdown voltage range from 5.93%to 33%at a gap distance of 5~20 cm,and the influence gradually decreases with the increase of the gap distance. When the gap distance is more than 20 cm,the relative deviations of breakdown voltage of each rod-rod or rod-plate electrode are both less than 5%.It is considered that the rod electrode diameter and tip shape have no effect on the rod-rod and rod-plate gap breakdown voltages when the gap distance exceeds 20 cm.
