In the early 1980s,the development of Sino-U.S.relations was not smooth due to factors such as the unresolved issue of establishing diplomatic relations between China and the United States,the enactment of the Taiwan Relations Act by the United States,and election politics of the United States.Faced with the escalating issue of US arms sales to Taiwan and its negative impact,Deng Xiaoping staked out the principles of developing Sino-U.S.relations at a critical moment,leading China to launch a diplomatic struggle against the United States,promoted negotiations between the two sides to reach the August 17th Communique,and played a crucial role during the negotiations.The August 17th Communique played a positive role in stabilizing Sino-U.S.relations and created conditions for the healthy development of Sino-U.S.relations in the mid to late 1980s.It reflects Deng Xiaoping's distinctive style and characteristics of daring to struggle and win,adhering to the firmness of principles and the flexibility of strategies.This historical experience has important reference significance for the current Sino-U.S.relations and coping with the international situation.
