Similarities and Differences in Stylistic Reform Between the Ancient Prose Movement and the New Yuefu Movement
The Ancient Prose Movement and the New Yuefu Movement were two significant stylistic reform movements that emerged concurrently during the mid-Tang Dynasty. Both movements were influenced by the sociocultural contexts of political reform and the revival of Confucianism, aiming to critique the ornate literary style prevalent since the Six Dynasties and to oppose the emptiness and formalism that characterized the literary scene. In practical application, both movements share notable similarities in their efforts to restore ancient methods and innovate;however, they differ significantly in their value orientations, artistic pursuits, and linguistic styles as exemplified by their leading representatives.Despite these differences, the two movements interacted with and complemented each other as they developed alongside one another.
