The increase in the incidence of metabolic diseases seriously affects human health and life safety worldwide.It is important to find effective drugs for the treatment of metabolic diseases from natural compounds.Berberine is an important quaternary ammonium alkaloid,mostly found in many traditional medicinal plants,in recent years,animal and clinical studies have proved that berberine and its metabolites have a good therapeutic effect on metabolic diseases.This article reviews the synthesis and extraction process of berberine and its pharmacological activities in metabolic diseases such as diabetes and hyperuricemia,so as to provide a more solid theoretical basis for the further development and utilization of berberine.
