Research Progress on Flame-Retardant Ultra-High Molecular Weight Polyethylene
Ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene(UHMWPE),as an important engineering plastic,is widely utilized in various fields such as medical devices,military defense,batteries,construction engineering,and sports equipment.However,its development is somewhat constrained due to its poor flame retardancy,attributed to the molecular chains consisting solely of carbon and hydrogen structures.This paper initially provides a brief overview of the combustion mechanism and flame retardant strategies of UHMWPE.Subsequently,it reviews the current status of domestic and foreign research on preparing flame-retardant UHMWPE.Research indicates that blending methods exhibit good flame retardant effects,and halogen-free flame retardancy and green environmental protection are the dominant directions for current and future development.The potential of in-situ preparation of flame-retardant UHMWPE using metallocene catalysts is significant,offering a novel strategy for modifying such difficult-to-process products as UHMWPE.
