The Current Status of Peptide Oral Delivery——Existing Strategies and the Application of Ionic Liquids
With the increasing market share of protein peptide drugs, the development of oral peptide delivery can effectively alleviate the limitations of long-term and high-frequency injection administration, such as multiple side effects and poor patient compliance, showing promising prospects. However, most protein peptide drugs have low oral bioavailability, posing significant challenges in the development of oral formulations.Ionic liquids, composed entirely of cations and anions, are a novel delivery material capable of enhancing oral drug absorption. This article reviews the current status of peptide oral delivery and the research on novel functional ionic liquids in peptide oral delivery.Firstly, the barriers of peptide oral delivery are outlined, followed by an introduction to strategies for peptide oral absorption. The basic properties of ionic liquids and their potential applications in the biomedical field are highlighted.Furthermore, the application of these functional ionic liquids in peptide oral delivery is analyzed, involving their mechanisms and effects on enhancing peptide solubility, stability, and bioavailability. Finally, the challenges and future directions in current research are discussed, aiming to provide references and insights for further promoting the research and application of novel functional ionic liquids in the field of peptide oral delivery.
