Chemical Engineering Experiment Design:Electrodialysis with Bipolar Membranes for Acid and Alkali Production
In this article,a chemical engineering experiment designed to explore the electrodialysis process with bipolar membranes(EDBM)for acid and alkali production has been presented. The experiment begins with the assembly of an integrated EDBM stack, featuring alternately arranged commercial bipolar membranes, anion exchange membranes, and cation exchange membranes positioned between electrodes.Feed solutions are then introduced into the electrodialysis device and circulated using peristaltic pumps.Under the influence of an electric field, sulfuric acid and lithium hydroxide are produced.Subsequently, the collected data are analyzed to calculate the energy consumption and current efficiency of the EDBM process for acid and alkali production. This experiment enhances students'practical skills through the assembly of the EDBM stack, while the data analysis component deepens their understanding of electro-driven membrane processes.
