Research Progress on the Application of Steel Slag in Cement Stabilized Layers for Roads
Steel slag,a by-product of the steelmaking process, and its stockpiling as waste not only causes a waste of resources but also poses a serious threat to the ecological environment. The use of steel slag for road ce-mentitiously stabilized layers(CSLs)has obvious economic and environmental benefits. This paper systematically outlines the source and physical and chemical properties of steel slag, its hydration characteristics, and the ef-fects of adding it to CSLs on setting time, strength, shrinkage, and durability, and analyzes its mechanism.Adding steel slag to the CSLs can significantly improve the strength of the CSLs and slow down the shrinkage of the system. In addition, the performance of steel slag-based CSLs can be further increased by using higher maintenance tempera-tures and considering synergistic effects between multiple solid wastes. Finally, the problems to be considered and the future research and development direction of applying steel slag in CSLs are proposed to provide a reference for further research and application of steel slag.
