Review of Research on Hydrological Processes in Artificial and Natural Forests of Picea crassifolia in the Shallow Mountainous Areas of the Qilian Mountains
The Qilian Mountains are an important water source area in the Hexi Corridor of Gansu prov-ince.The shallow mountainous areas play a crucial role in connecting the mountain forest ecosystem and the oa-sis ecosystem. The water resources of the Qilian Mountains are irreplaceable for sustaining the socio-economic development and ecological security of the Hexi Corridor oasis. This study reviews research progress on soil moisture changes, soil moisture transport, soil moisture connectivity, water conservation capacity, and hydro-logical process differences between artificial and natural forests in the shallow mountainous areas of the Qilian Mountains. It suggests that future research should utilize new observation and simulation methods to focus on core scientific questions such as differentiating soil hydrological functions between artificial spruce forests and natural forests understanding differentiation patterns and mechanisms of soil moisture movement between artificial and natural forests, differences in water conservation capacity,as well as key controlling factors. To clarify the process of soil moisture change in artificial forest and natural forest, and how the construction of artificial forest affects the local water cycle process, and to determine the vegetation construction and regional ecosystem man-agement strategy in Qilian Mountains.
