Evaluation of Cold Resistance of Different Camellia japonica Clones in Central China—A Case Study of Xinyang City
To screen out Camellia japonica varieties with strong cold resistance and improve cultivation effi-ciency.Six clones of C.japonica from Xinyang city, including C.japonica ′Long-huo-zhu′,C.japonica ′Bei-la-mei-gui′,C.japonica ′Chi-dan′,C.japonica ′Nai-dong′,C.japonica ′Qi-xing-qiu′,and C.japonica ′Pa-ke-si′ were chosen as experimental materials. The samples were collected at three different temperatures(-3,0,and 3℃),in order to assess various physiological and biochemical indicators, including the levels of malondialdehyde(MDA)in the leaves, antioxidant enzyme activity, and osmotic regulating chemicals.A thorough assessment of C.japonica's resistance to cold was conducted using the principal component analysis and membership function method. The results showed that in comparison to 0 and 3℃,a low temperature of-3℃significantly increased the superoxide dismutase(SOD)activity of the clones C.japonica ′Long-huo-zhu′,C.japonica ′Bei-la-mei-gui′,and C.japonica ′Qi-xing-qiu′.It also significantly increased the soluble protein contents of the clones C.japonica ′Pa-ke-si′ and C.japonica ′Qi-xing-qiu′,and decreased the MDA contents of the clones C.japonica ′Long-huo-zhu′,C.japonica ′Bei-la-mei-gui′,and C.japonica ′Nai-dong′.Principal component analysis revealed that the cold tolerance of several C.japonica clones was mostly due to the combined activity of protective enzyme systems and osmotic adjustment chemicals. The cold resist-ance of the six C.japonica clones was thoroughly analyzed using the membership function approach, and the or-der of cold resistance was C.japonica ′Bei-la-mei-gui′>C.japonica ′Long-huo-zhu′>C.japonica ′Chi-dan′>C.japonica ′Qi-xing-qiu′>C.japonica ′Nai-dong′>C.japonica ′Pa-ke-si′.
