Analysis of the Characteristics of Intense Rains with Multiple Duration over the Past Ten Years in Zengcheng,Guangzhou
Using the minute and hourly rainfall data from 41 meteorological observation stations in Ze-ncheng from 2011 to 2021,this work analyzed the characteristics of intense rains with multiple duration in various towns(residential communities). The results are shown as follows. For the years studied, there were a total of 6 126 events of short-range intense rains in the district,or an average of 149.4 incidents per sta-tion.The town of Paitan had the most(185.8 events)and the community of Zhucun had the least(81.3 e-vents).Across the whole district, the extremes of such rains all exceeded 80 mm,with a golf course at the Yongning Community having 184.4 mm,the maximum for the years of interest. For the 50%and 75%quantile thresholds of these rains, the Xiancun Town topped by having 28.5 and 37.6 mm respectively, and for the 99%and 99.5%quantile thresholds, the Xintang Town and Yongning Community ranked first by having 91.7 and 136.3 mm respectively.By contrast, the maximum 5-min rainfall was relatively scattered and the distribution of both the 10-and 30-min rainfall was similar, showing a tendency of being more in the south than in the north part of the district and a somewhat different spatiotemporal distribution pattern from the annually averaged rainfall totals. One of the important causes for disasters inflicted by extreme intense rains was that the 5-and 30-min rainfall as well as the 1-h rainfall were characterized by large amounts, high intensity and extended persistence.
