At present,corpus-based translation studies mainly focus on the lexical and grammatical features of the translated language, with relatively little attention given to discourse features. As the basic functional unit of coherent discourse, topic chain plays an important role in the realization of discourse cohesion and coherence. Therefore, through comparative analysis of Cao Xueqin's A Dream of Red Mansions and its two English versions, namely Yang Xianyi,Dynadiere'version and Hawkes'one, combining the differences in text structure and topic chain, this paper discovers that the text structure of the two English versions conforms to the characteristics of the target text,i.e.,there are fewer clauses and more connectives. With respect to the translation of topic chains, nonetheless, significant discrepancies are discernible between the two versions.Generally speaking, the Hawkes'translation better manifests the distinctive features of English discourse, thereby facilitating a more comprehensive conveyance of the Chinese story.
