The Rewriting and the Reconstruction of the Image of China:A Research on Tcheng Ki-Tong's French Translation of Strange Stories from a Chinese Studio
Les Contes Chinois published in 1889 by the late Qing diplomat Tcheng Ki-Tong is currently known as the earliest French-selected translation of Strange Stories from a Chinese Studio. In this version,Tcheng Ki-Tong changes the principle of fidelity advocated in the past and rewrites the original content through various translation strategies such as adaptation, omission, and domestication.Based on Lefevere's rewriting theory, this paper examines his translation from the perspectives of ideology and poetics. It is found that Tcheng Ki-Tong rewrites the original content to conform to the culture of the target language and achieve the ultimate aim of reconstructing a positive image of China.
