Identity Construction of Immigrants in The Funeral Party
The novella The Funeral Party described stories about the immigration life of a Russian Jewish community in the United States during the latter half of the 20th century. The book highlighted the characters'changes in the immigration life. This article analyzes the main factors that influence their construction of immigration identities. It is found that:a)language not only serves as an important approach to construct identity, but also a critical indicator of immigrants'identity construction, and the process of constructing new identity also influences the characters'language choices and language learning;b)the Russian elements in the characters'living habits, such as clothing and diets, show that Russian culture has imprints on the main characters, and that they experience cultural conflicts during the identity construction;c)the important impact of religion on identity construction is mainly reflected by the fact that Christians are generally better accustomed to the American life than Judaists;and d)value is deeply-rooted in the identity construction process, which requires the immigrant characters to adjust their values so as to finalize the formation of new identities.Such complex and interwoven factors not only shape the main characters'identity construction as immigrants, but also reflect their struggles in the tough process.
