With the development of computer,Internet and information technologies, the production and dissemination of knowledge have undergone profound changes.Traditional print-based humanities are confronting new challenges whereas computer-assisted digital humanities(DH)is receiving increasingly more attention.DH is expected to reinvigorate humanities with its promises of new methods, new questions and new discoveries. However,it is still controversial whether DH is an independent discipline and it is severely criticized by traditional humanists. This study investigates its definitions, origins in development, research areas and practices as well as its challenges and opportunities with particular reference to digital literary studies, which may shed light on literary studies as well as new humanities in the digital age.
