The affective turn,as sociologist Patricia Clough has called it,is the latest in a series of"turns"to sweep the Humanities and the Social Sciences.By explaining some key terms such as affect and emotion and some related findings in affect theory, this essay argues that the affective turn emphasizes both the preconscious workings of affective forces and what Sara Ahmed famously calls the cultural politics of emotions. For the latter, the essay holds that being culturally scripted and interpersonally mobile, emotions are important circuits through which power relations are felt, negotiated and contested.Emotions are not only a space for self-discovery,but also a tool of social critique.
