Criticism of Urban Space:On Contemporary French Semiotics of Space
The original purpose of semiotics of space,on the basis of linguistic analysis, was to derive a universal grammar of space within the framework of semiotics.Semioticists represented by Greimas were dedicated to finding the deep grammar and methods of connection of space. They criticize the language of existing urban space and call for the introduction of more loving care, such as beauty and goodwill, rather than the instrumentality of this language. With regard to Roland Barthes, the meaning of urban space symbols in a specific discourse became increasingly the focus. It was the process by which symbols were impoverished that served as the object of criticism, hence a criticism of a"meta-discourse"dominated by certain ideology. Moreover,Baudrillard went further by questioning the symbolic representation of space, which is precisely the consequence of the universal symbolization of the contemporary society.
