"Encyclopedia"or"encyclopedic"is a term commonly mentioned by early romanticists in their works. The thoughts of Novalis Encyclopedia are in a transitional period from enlightenment to natural metaphysics.Romantic elements appear in the general trend of encyclopedias.Unlike the French encyclopedia school,Novalis envisaged that encyclopedias should be in a romantic form as much as possible.Encyclopedia is part of Romantic Poetics. The task of this"romantic"encyclopedia is to systematize the"chaos"of science and art, rebuild the"overall science",and realize the unity of each split part.Fragments, novels, and essays are the carriers of Novalis's romantic poetics. In his view, the real poetics is to pursue the glory of freedom, abandon rational arbitrariness, overcome barriers between disciplines, break through the gap between subjective and objective, and thus restore the unity of the whole world.Only from the perspective of romantic poetics can we truly understand the original intention of Novalis to conceive of the encyclopedia.
