"Tragedy and Revolution"is one of the chapters in Raymond Williams's well-known work Modern Tragedy, and it was anthologized in A Handbook of Modern Tragic Theories edited by Professor Wang Jie of Zhejiang University in 2019.The canonization of this text certainly has something to do with the esteem its author enjoys in the academic world, but it can also be attributed to a number of profound insights contained therein.Unlike most traditional theorists of tragedy,Williams lays great emphasis on the close relationship between tragic art and tragic experience;he also views revolution as a long and painful historical process.Instead of denying the wide-spread tragic experience in the society,Marxist criticism employs tragic art as a powerful weapon of the social critique.
