The Loss and Search of Feminist Identity:Feminist Confession of Anne Sexton
As a representative poet of American Confessional School,Anne Sexton with her highly personal and confessional verse depicts her loss of feminist identity and her search of it.Behind her seemingly ideal life as a woman,it conceals a traumatized daughter, depressed wife and hysterical mother, regarding poetry as her soothing psychotherapy.Sexton's depression is rooted in her life-long anxiety about her own female identity. On the one hand, the depression from patriarchy leads to her loss of feminist identity;on the other hand, the lack of maternal love since a young age results in her desire for and denial of motherhood in her adult years. In her poetic confession, she tries to search the lost self and to rebuild her feminist identity.
