摘要

在英国当代著名女作家罗丝·特里梅因的多部新历史主义小说中,《音乐与寂静》凭借其丰富、密集而又点睛式的音乐元素,为丹麦17世纪克里斯蒂安四世王朝的这部宫廷"新"史营造了极为突出的音景,成为一部独特的"声音/音乐—历史"文本.本文指出,一方面,以或显或隐方式在场的音乐贯穿小说始终,成为重要的叙事线索.另一方面,作家尤为关注音乐与小说人物复杂而又矛盾的阶级、宗教身份、立场与言说方式之间微妙、隐秘的互动关系.在这一互动过程中,形形色色的二元对立——规训与颠覆、神性与人性、有声与无声之间形成了巨大的张力,深入地推进了小说文本的叙事进程.本文还将进一步揭示小说人物最终如何打破这些二元对立,超越阶级、宗教以及言说形式的局限,体现音乐双重性、而不是强制单一性的特征,从而增强小说的叙事性,实现其艺术性超越.

Abstract

Among Rose Tremain's new historical novels,Music & Silence,with its rich and dense musical elements,creates an outstanding soundscape for the 17th century Denmark during the reign of Christian Ⅳ,making it a unique text of"sound/music-history".In this paper,I argue that on the one hand,the writer explicitly or implicitly employs music as an important narrative thread throughout the novel;on the other hand,the writer pays particular attention to the subtle and hidden interactions between music and the complex and contradictory identities and positions of the characters concerning class,religion and ways of speaking.In this process,such dichotomies as disciplining and subversion,divinity and humanity,sound and silence,foster huge tensions that profoundly propel the narrative process.This paper will further reveal how the protagonists eventually break these dichotomies,transcend the limitations of class,religion,and the form of speech,embodying the characteristics of musical doubleness,rather than enforced singularity,thus enhancing the novel's narrative and achieving its artistic transcendence.
