Insects Protein Prospects:Application of Black Soldier Fly in the Pet Industry
In recent years, both the pet and traditional feed industries have faced significant challenges due to shortages in protein feed ingredients, driving demand for high-quality alternative protein sources. The black soldier fly,a sustainable insect resource, has emerged as a promising solution due to its broad dietary range, rapid reproduction, and eco-friendly characteristics. Its nutritional value is concentrated in the larval and pre-pupal stages, where it is rich in essential amino acids and exhibits an amino acid profile superior to that of soybean meal, alongside various trace elements. The fatty acid composition of black soldier fly larvae primarily comprises medium-chain saturated fatty acids, with additional bioactive compounds such as antimicrobial peptides and chitin.Approved as a protein source for pet food, black soldier fly meal has been shown to enhance palatability and improve pet digestibility. This study reviews the biological characteristics and nutritional profile of the black soldier fly, providing a theoretical basis for its expanded application within the pet food industry.
