Mussel adhesive protein can adhere to almost all kinds of surfaces with high strength, toughness, and resistance to water or moisture. This environmentally friendly, efficient adhesive in mild condition has aroused interests of researchers, especially in how it works and where it can be used. Most of the studieshave demonstrated that the strong adhesion ability of mussel is associated with a large amount of 3,4-dihydroxyphenyalanine(DOPA) in its adhesion protein.Inspired by the method that mussel adhesive proteins works, scientists found it possible to use DA instead of DOPA to achieve similar adhesion, because DA molecule has similar functional groups to DOPA as well as the similar molecular structure after polymerization. In this paper, the adhesive mechanism of mussel-inspired bio-mimic polymer,PDA,was introduced, and the applications of its derivatives PDA and in different fields, such as surface modification, catalyst, bioantifouling and biomedicine was reviewed.
