Investigation of indoor formaldehyde pollution in four residential buildings in Beijing
Objective To investigate the formaldehyde contamination in indoor air and the influence factors in newly flats. Methods To measure the amount of formaldehyde in indoor air in 220 different rooms of 51 newly constructed flats.Interscan Toxic Gas Analyzer (Portable Formaldehyde Model 4160-2 HCHO,Interscan Corporation,USA) was used. Results The first inspection after refurbishment showed that the average concentration of formaldehyde in indoor air was 0.18 mg/m3,exceeding the national limit 1.8 times, with the highest level reaching 11.7 times. The second inspection was taken for some fiats three months later,it showed that the decline of the formaldehyde concentration was 0.15mg/m3,still exceeding the national standard. The amount of formaldehyde in indoor air closely correlated with the micro-climate inside the room, which was proportional to the room temperature and the wind speed. Conclusion The newly refurbished rooms contained formaldehyde contamination at a high level. For the interest of health, residents are recommended to move into the newly refurbished flat after three-month ventilation.
