Characteristics of Phonetic Notation of Chinese Characters and Sources of Ancient Dictionaries
When examining the sources of ancient dictionaries,we can usually analyze them from three aspects:character pattern, pronunciation and meaning.Compared with character pattern and interpretation, phonetic notation is more stable. Therefore, the identification of phonetic notation of Chinese characters is an effective way to examine the sources of dictionary documents.Shinsen Jikyō makes extensive reference to Chinese documents such as Xuanying Yingyi,Yupian and Qieyun. It preserves a large number of lost documents in terms of character pattern, pronunciations, meanings and vocabulary, which has great aca-demic value. To make full use of these information,we must first identify the documentary sources for each item. The phonetic notation of Gu Yewang's Yupian is generally mixed initial consonant"Cong"and"Xie".Based on this,it can be speculated whether the relevant entries in Shinsen Jikyō come from Yupian or not.
