The Semantic Change of Huo(活)and Its Mechanism and Motivation in the Structure of Huo(活)VP
In ancient Chinese, monosyllable word huo(活)in the structure of huo VP can be used both as an adjective and adverb. When huo is used as an adjective,it has two semantemes, and three semantemes as an adverb. Its five semantemes have inherited its original two semantic features which are[+animate]and[+vivid],and have formed two completely different semantic evolutionary paths:one path is"animate>in a living state>abruptly;compulsively",the other is"animate>vivid>really;purely;sheerly".In the process of semantic change, most of factors such as the semantic features of huo itself, the pragmatic patterns where it is used, metaphor and metonymy, subjectivization and intersubjectivization all play important roles. What's more, based on the investigation of different semantemes and usages of monosyllable word huo in ancient Chinese,it can be concluded that there is no any evolutionary relationship between the three senses of the bisyllable adverb huohuo(活活)in modern Chinese.
