A study on Xu Xuan's Phonetic Notation of Shuowen Jiezi(《说文解字》)
With the help of relevant historical phonetic and notation data,this paper discusses Xu Xuan's phonetic notation about seven characters"dui(嵟)","dou(郖)","hao((势))","tong(桶)","huang(㡆)","ji((槪))"and"lou(謱)"from the perspective of form(形),sound(音),meaning(义)of Chinese characters and the rela-tionship between them.This paper tries to remind that as we accept Xu Xuan's phonetic notation,we should also pay attention to its shortcomings.
