1816年阿美士德使团访华期间,使团成员对北方沿海航线和主要口岸进行水文调查,并利用沿海船民基于北洋贸易航海经验形成的水文知识,结合科学调查实践,制作了为数众多的调查报告、航海图等资料.这些资料又经过英国东印度公司水文部门和英国海道测量局等官方机构整理和校订,转化为基于西方科学的水文知识,用于两次鸦片战争中英军北上交涉和作战,也用于北方开埠后英国对华贸易航线与北洋航线的对接,体现了英国对华扩张与科学调查之间相辅相成的关系.
Abstract
During the visit of the Amherst Mission to China in 1816,members of the delegation conducted hydrographic surveys of the northern coastal routes and major ports.They made use of the knowledge of local seafarers and merchants who sailed on the trading routes of the northern seas.Numerous survey reports,charts,and other materials came out of the mission.The hydrographic department of the British East India Company and the British Hydrographic Office collated and revised the data.This information was used to guide the British army's subsequent campaigns and strengthen Britain's bargaining position during the two Opium Wars.It also facilitated the economic penetration of the northern coastal routes after the opening of treaty ports in the area.The Amherst Mission's surveys embodied the mutually complementary relationship between scientific surveys and military expansion on the part of Great Britain.
