Abstract
In the demographic history of Portuguese creoles in Asia, there is an important category known as casado.Unlike royal officials, soldiers, singles, itinerant merchants, and missionaries, casado refers to people who have entered into marriage and have a fixed residence in the Estado da India. In the first twenty years of Portuguese settlement in Macau, the term casado rarely appeared in the population data.It was not until 1579 when data on casado became available. However, when reading through the literature on Macau's demographic and social history,we rarely come across reports on these individuals.Data on the category stopped being reported after 1669.By the late eighteenth century, reports on the demographics of Macau submitted to Lisbon no longer use the category of casado.
