Research on Influence of Cooling and Lubrication on Drilling Characteristics and Machinability of Metal Glass
The high temperature during bulk metallic glass(BMG)drilling can easily lead to serious problems such as light emission, large burrs, and hole erosion. This paper studies the drilling process, characteristics and hole quality of zir-conium-based BMG under dry cutting, freezing cutting, and cutting fluid condition.By comparing the dynamic change process of thrust force, drilling energy, tool wear and hole burr under three cooling and lubrication conditions,a process method suit-able is put forward for BMG drilling. The results indicate that the accumulation of tool wear and thermal softening are the main factors affecting the drilling process of BMG and the dynamic changes of thrust force, dry cutting can cause the hole material to be in a supercooled liquid state and the hole cannot be formed. The burrs of the metal glass entrance hole are mainly coro-nal and irregular twisted burr, while the exit hole are coronal burrs.Frozen cutting is only suitable for low-speed drilling of BMG,the best hole quality and the minimal tool wear can be obtained by high-speed drilling with cutting fluid.
