Effects of Atomizing Jet on Chip Breakability During 42CrMo Turning Process
In the metal processing, chip periodic fracture and break are conducive to the machining stability and the realization of high-quality as well as efficient processing. The atomizing jet is one of important cooling methods.By com-pressing the air,the mixed compressed air and cutting fluid are intermittently sprayed on and formatted atomization. The small droplets emitted by the atomized jet have better permeability when comparing with those by overflow cooling of cutting fluid. The cooling medium can be applied to the tool rake face and the chip inner surface more accurately by the atomized jet.In order to explore the influence of atomized jet on chip breakability of 42CrMo steel, three cooling methods including dry cutting, cutting fluid overflow, and atomized jet are applied in this study. The two feed rates including 0.15mm/r and 0.18mm/r are used in turning experiments. The chip length, chip curl radius, cutting force and tool-chip contact length are measured.Under the same feed rate by using atomized jet, both the chip length and tool-chip contact length are shorter. The chip curl radius and the cutting force is smaller. The roughness of the chip inner surface is smaller.
