Single Stroke Root Cleaning Tool for Impeller Corners with Both Chip Removal and Load Reduction
As a complementary machining process for residual material in the impeller corner area,root cleaning plays a very important role in the overall impeller CNC machining.The root cleaning of cover impeller has the characteristics of push tool feed,large curvature of corner surface,large cutting allowance and space geometry limitation.The tip cutting per-formance of traditional ball-ended milling cutter is not enough,and the application of the cover impeller's root cleaning pro-cessing will lead to large cutting load,chip extrusion,and eventually lead to premature tool failure,poor surface quality and other problems.In this paper,a tool with a cutting top structure and a large chip holder structure for different corner sizes is proposed to address the characteristics and difficulties of cover impeller's root cleaning and derive the expressions of its cut-ting edges.Simulations and experiments are set up for the traditional ball end mill and the new cutting top milling cutter.The results show that the new cutting top milling cutter reduces the cutting force up to 77.6%compared with the traditional ball end mill,and the cutting process is more smooth and reliable with higher machining quality.
