Study of Mechanical and Cutting Properties of Microwave Sintered SiAlON Ceramic End Mills
Microwave sintering method is used to prepare bar stock for grinding SiAlON ceramic end mills. The influ-ence of pressing method and pressure on the microstructure and mechanical properties of microwave sintered SiAlON ceram-ic bar stock is studied, and SiAlON ceramic end mills are prepared, and the cutting properties are investigated. The results show that for large aspect ratio SiAlON ceramics, radial pressing can obtain raw billets with more uniform density distribu-tion,and the SiAlON ceramic specimens at a pressing pressure of 100 MPa are free of microscopic defects and have good mechanical properties. Microwave sintered SiAlON ceramic end mills can be used for high-speed cutting of nickel-based high-temperature alloys, and the tool life is twice as long as that of imported coated tools.
