Millet Production,Circulation and Price in the Northern Area of Qing Dynasty
Millet is an important food crop in northern regions. With the social and economic development of the Qing Dynasty, its planting area declined, but it was still the main food source for residents in many regions. In the mid-Qing Dynasty, the annual output of millet was estimated to be more than 100 million dan;the amount involved in circulation was more than 9.6 million dan each year. From the overall price point of view, the price of millet was close to the price of wheat;from the perspective of long-term price trends, its increase was lower than wheat, which was related to the lower degree of commercialization in the Qing Dynasty. From the investigation of the millet market integration, the degree of synchroniza-tion of millet price changes in the northern provinces had reached a considerable level, which indicates that there was frequent millet output from surplus grain areas to food deficit areas, and the market efficiency was also relatively high;this also reflects that the development of the grain market in the Qing Dynasty reached a high level.
