The Evolution of Cassava Toxicity Awareness in Guangdong during the Qing Dynasty and Republican Periods
Since its introduction during the Qing Dynasty,cassava has been extensively culti-vated in Guangdong due to its high yield,short growth cycle,and strong adaptability.It saw rapid development during the wartime period.Cassava contains toxins and must be detoxified before consumption.The evolution of Guangdong's awareness of cassava toxicity has under-gone three stages:initial understanding based on experience before the Republic of China,expansion of research by agronomists using modern agricultural science before the war,and in-depth research led by the government after the outbreak of the war.Despite increasingly deep research into cassava's toxicity,the frequent incidents of poisoning still occur due to the asymmetric dissemination of information between academics and the public,government promotion strategies,and the public's level of acceptance.
