Technological development of global satellite remote sensing for methane emissions and impact on China's oil and gas industry
Driven by the global green and low-carbon transition, each country is increasingly focusing on the authenticity, reliability, and consistency of methane emissions data.In the methane emission reduction action plans or strategies issued by the European Union and the United States, the application of methane satellite remote sensing monitoring technology has been upgraded to the height of national strategy for the first time, and the oil and gas industry has become the main area of concern for satellite monitoring technology due to its high concentration of methane emission sources, high emission intensity, and outstanding emission reduction potential. It can not only discover large-scale methane leaks during oil and gas production and transportation, but also monitor methane leaks generated by routine operations, and can also enable precise tracking of methane emissions from individual ground-level mining facilities, greatly enhancing monitoring accuracy. At the same time, the transparency of methane emissions information is increasing, resulting in oil and gas companies or information asymmetry and a passive situation. It is suggested that China should strengthen the support for methane satellite remote sensing monitoring technology, promote the use of methane remote sensing monitoring technology in China's oil and gas industry, facilitate cross-field cooperation, establish a sound methane emission monitoring, reporting and verification(MRV)system for national oil and gas industry, and raise the awareness of oil and gas enterprises to proactively disclose information on methane emissions,so as to further enhance the strength and level of methane emission reduction of China's oil and gas enterprises.
