India's Strengthening Relationship with the "Global South":Strategic Ambitions and Constraints
The"Global South"has played an increasingly crucial role in the international arena and has become an essential factor in shaping the international landscape and order.India recognizes the significance of the"Global South"in enhancing its international influence and facilitating its economic transition.It has positioned itself as a spokesperson and leader of the"Global South,"as well as a bridge between the"Global South"and the"Global North."In so doing,India aims to achieve multiple strategic objectives:raising its voice in multilateral mechanisms,broadening its maneuvering space in major-power competition,weakening China's influence among the"Global South,"and deepening India-US relations.India has been promoting its relationship with the"Global South"by strengthening bilateral and multilateral consultations,expanding development cooperation,advancing defense exchanges,and giving play to its"soft power."India's strengthening relationship with the"Global South"is not only a continuation and upgrading of its foreign policy,but also reveals the country's strategic ambition to grow from a major power to a"Vishwaguru."It also reflects the global geopolitical changes where the United States-led West are wooing India in their containment against China.On the whole,India's efforts,despite some success,will continue to face the constraints of their overly pragmatic orientation and the country's insufficient overall strength.More importantly,as most"Global South"countries are reluctant to take sides between China,the US and India,it will be difficult for India to fulfill its strategic objectives by way of the"Global South."
