Institutionalization of US-Japan-Philippines Trilateral Cooperation and Its Implications
The institutionalization of US-Japan-Philippines trilateral cooperation and its upgrade to comprehensive strategic coordination is regarded as a historical turning point in the relations among the three countries.By synergizing the US-Japan and US-Philippines alliances with the Japan-Philippines strategic partnership, and strengthening strategic coordination among the three countries, the institutionalized trilateral cooperation aims to create a new front for the advancement of Indo-Pacific strategy and integrated deterrence. However, the in-depth development of trilateral cooperation mechanisms will face many constraints, mainly from domestic political factors and differences in each other's priorities.Nevertheless, the increasingly tightened trilateral cooperation network, coupled with the advent of a US-Japan-Philippines-Australia quadrilateral arrangement, will have major implications for the situation in the Taiwan Strait, the South China Sea and the East China Sea,and bring more interference factors to China's maritime planning, its balance between upholding rights and interests and maintaining stability, and its relations with ASEAN.
