From Modernization of the State to Theories on Cultivating a Sense of Community for the Chinese Nation:Formation and Development of Gu Bao's Frontier Studies
Discussions on the notion of the Chinese nation started long ago from the later period of Qing Dynasty when the country encountered the invasions from those world's great powers.And later in the mid of 20th century,much scholarly attention was being paid to the community of the Chinese nation.Among the theoretical explorations,Professor Gu Bao had been one of the rare academic pioneers who devoted his whole life to studying the society and culture of ethnic minorities living in China's western border areas.The theories and methods of frontier studies he had proposed demonstrate his profound understanding of the country's policies and regulations,with a strong sense of historical awareness and principles,which provide a foundation to further understand the historical formation and currenct development of the sense of community for the Chinese nation.This article attempts to systematically identify Gu's pattern of thought,methods of research and course of development,unveil the characteristics of Gu's frontier studies and his academic contribution to theories on cultivating a sense of community for the Chinese nation.
