The rise of smart cities presents both opportunities and challenges for the development and talent cultivation in disciplines such as Geographic Information Science(GIS)and human geography. The teaching of Principles of Geographic Information Systems is a crucial component in nurturing talents across various disciplines. However, the current methods of course instruction have certain limitations and fall short of meeting the demands and requirements for talent development in the context of smart city development. This paper focuses on exploring potential reforms in the teaching of Principles of Geographic Information Systems in the backdrop of smart city development, which includes the design of theoretical content, the cultivation of practical operational skills, and the optimization of faculty structure. This study hopesthat the implementation of these measures will contribute to the cultivation of comprehensive talents in the fields of Geographic Information Science and urban geography, which are with competencies in smart city development and GIS technology skills.
