The Construction Technique of Rammed Earth Walls at the Southwest Corner of the Jinzhongdu
The city wall of Zhongdu from the Jin dynasty, constructed in 1151,has only three sections remaining above ground in the southwest area. This paper examines the ramming process, foundation, columns, rammed earth composition, rammed layers, and rammed nests of the two city wall sites in the west and south of Zhongdu. The analysis is based on the relevant records of ramming the city wall found in the"Yingzao Fashi,"archaeological excavations, scientific testing of unearthed materials, historical documents, previous investigations, and examples of city walls from the same period. The findings reveal the characteristics of the ramming process at these two sites, providing a solid foundation for the protection and display of the city wall of Zhongdu from the Jin dynasty.
