Re-Development Strategies for Small-Scale Public Architecture within the Context of Rural Revitalization:A Case Study of the Xianlong Public Restroom Renovation Project in Kaiping
Since the convening of the 19th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, the strategy of rural revitalization has been expeditiously propagated across the nation, with the initiative of 'planning-led' development and the notion of 'design descending to the villages' attaining a consensus across governmental, scholarly, and commercial sectors. Nonetheless, the trajectory and methodologies pertaining to the refurbishment of the rural landscape manifest a profusion of styles and a striking diversity. This treatise employs the public lavatory refurbishment in Xianlong Village of Kaiping City as an exemplar to probe the refurbishment and innovation of diminutive public edifices within the rural rejuvenation endeavor, upholding the ethos of 'locality' and the precept of 'neo-vernacular architecture'. It advocates the exhaustive deployment of indigenous materials, the essence of the locale, and artisanal construction techniques to engender public architectural creations imbued with local idiosyncrasy and cultural significance. Via an amalgamation of theoretical scrutiny, case exposition, historical retrospection, empirical inquiry, and the perpetuation and innovative advancement of tradition, the author engages in an in-depth reflection and inquiry into the constructional challenges within rural revitalization. The discourse proffers substantive referential value and instructive implications for the advancement of the rural revitalization strategy, the enhancement of the rural environmental quality, and the fortification of cultural self-assurance.
