Based in China and Embracing the World:Establishing a Disci-plinary System of National Secu-rity with Chinese Characteristics
A holistic approach to national security sets forth rich,complex,comprehensive,and integrated require-ments,both in theory and practice,for the research and discipline building of nation-al security studies.Building a holistic national security architecture requires systematic thinking and a holistic,com-posite approach.This is based on the expe-rience of similar disciplines abroad and,more importantly,in accordance with the demands of China's national security environment and goals.We should devel-op the discipline of national security studies in a composite manner.We need to understand the twin attributes of the discipline that it is both interdisciplinary and comprehensive and the relationship between these two attributes.The focus of national security studies should be on resolving national security issues with the help of a combination of academic achievements in natural sciences,social sciences,and humanities.As an emerging discipline,national security studies will have three functions:scientific research,education,and policy support.Its develop-ment requires full consideration and concerted collaboration at multiple levels,including theory building,practical guid-ance,and social division of labor.Assigned to the interdisciplinary category,national security studies bear the attributes of a comprehensive discipline in nature.This discipline is not a mechanical intersection;it requires an organic integration that goes far beyond.Only in this way can national security studies truly fulfill the political and academic missions of"filling vacu-ums"at the borders of traditional disci-plines.
