The birth of national security studies in China as an indepen-dent academic discipline can be deemed the product of the endeavors of New China in safeguarding its national security and the result of the assiduous explorations by the Chinese academic community since the reform and opening up.Clarifying the concept of national security studies is undoubtedly an extremely important task for the construction of this emerging discipline.Over the past three decades,Chinese scholars have made useful at-tempts to explain what national security studies are.However,such efforts are still in their infancy,and the concept of nation-al security studies demands further discus-sion.This paper starts with the definitions of nation and national security and then tries to define and analyze the concept of national security studies.Finally,for the sake of academic discussion,it prelimi-narily compares the differences between national security studies as an indepen-dent discipline and political science as an adjacent discipline.
