Building a Strong,Amiable, and Modern Socialist Country—Mao Zedong's Thought on National Security
Building a strong, modern socialist country is not only the strategic vision and goal for the development of China, but also the most solid foundation and the most reliable guarantee for its national security. In modern times,China was mired in backwardness and conse-quently suffered repeated foreign aggres-sions.The backwardness of the old China manifested itself in the level of the produc-tive forces, when there was no industrial-ization and cattle-drawn iron plows were used in agricultural production,as well as in the relations of production, which were poorly organized and severely fragmented.By contrast,New China was committed to promoting its industrialization, which resulted in the establishment of a complete and independent industrial system. Thus, the Chinese people were united as one and strong as a fortress. They helped build the social and economic foundation for a strong, modern country. Now,China has the power to defeat all foreign aggressors and deter those that have designs on it.The"drifting apart"within the European Union, the dissolution of the Soviet Union, and the ongoing decline of the United States have all proved that building a strong and modern country constitutes a necessary but insufficient condition for national security. As two Chinese adages read,"Those who conquer others are strong, but those who conquer themselves are truly powerful";"Modesty helps one go forward, whereas conceit makes one lag behind."Only by building a strong and amiable country that acts in accordance with the basic principles of socialism and the norms governing international rela-tions can China enjoy long-lasting peace and stability.
