India's National Security Strate-gy:Ambitions,Causes,and Prac-tices
Due to its unique geo-envi-ronmental features(bounded by moun-tains and oceans),historical legacies(with the British Raj in particular),and tradition-al cultures(centered with the Hindu conception of social and world order),India has had extremely rich practices in terms of national security since its found-ing and has hence formulated a kind of national security strategy, with distinct Indian characteristics,in practice other than in published documents.Generally speaking, when guiding the national security practices after 1947's indepen-dence,the successive governments of India have upheld the basic principles articulat-ed in Kautilya's Arthashastra and the Hindu doctrines and traditions, carrying forward the inherited various colonial security policies and philosophies of the British Raj and sometimes dressed by King Ashoka's Saddharma.New Delhi's national security strategy in practical terms aims at exclusively creating an India-dominated security order in the South Asian subconti-nent,persistently building up its capacity and system as a"net security provider"in the Indian Ocean rim,and vigorously expanding its visible presence in the Pacific region,in a bid to turn itself into"one of the leading powers in the world"that enjoys a sincere"strategic autonomy."
