Australian National Security Strategy:Concept,Practice,and Evaluation
Due to its unique natural geography, history, and culture,Australia,a middle power in the Asia-Pacific region and an advanced economy in the world, had embraced a strategic concept of seek-ing security through alliances with major powers long before the establishment of the Commonwealth.Presently, the international political and economic landscape has entered a period of pro-found adjustments, rendering the securi-ty environment in the region unprece-dentedly complex and volatile. In such circumstances,Australia has chosen to meet changes with constancy,as evi-denced by its continued effiorts to defend the alliance with the United States, which it deems the cornerstone of its security.Accordingly,Australia has recalibrated its military deployment, diplomatic rela-tions,and even economic arrangements.Although the current national security strategy that pursues security through alliances has provided some practical benefits for Australia,it limits the coun-try's space for development and strategic autonomy that it deserves.
